In most Australian states, the cost of a standard dividing fence is shared 50/50 with the neighbour. Premium upgrades are generally paid by whichever owner wants them.

A standard boundary fence up to around 1.8 metres is exempt development in most states, so no approval is needed. Front fences, corner blocks, heritage areas and anything taller or masonry often do need approval. Rules vary by council, so confirm before you sign a contract.

Most residential fences are installed in one to three days once materials are on site. Removing an old fence, digging in rock or working on a steep slope adds time, and brick or frameless glass takes longer because of footings and fabrication lead times. Check that each quote covers the same scope: removal and disposal of the old fence, post footings, gates and hardware, and site cleanup. A cheaper quote often excludes rock excavation or leaves the old fence for you to deal with. Ask each installer to itemise inclusions so you're comparing like for like.

Colorbond and aluminium typically last 20 years or more with little upkeep beyond an occasional wash. Timber paling has a shorter life and needs staining or sealing every few years to slow rot and warping. Ground contact and coastal salt exposure are the main things that shorten a fence's life, whatever the material.
